Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis de Pombal by Louis-Michel van Loo and Claude-Joseph Vernet, 1767.
Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the marquis de Pombal and almighty prime minister of Joseph I of Portugal was the issue of one of history's first restraining orders. Maria I, Joseph's sucessor, who abhorred Pombal, commanded him to keep permanently 20 miles far from her presence. If she were to travel near his estates, he was compelled to remove himself from his palace to fulfill the royal decree.
